Document shredding event date announced
MOUNT VERNON - Shred It Day for personal document shredding will be held this year on Saturday, April 16 in the parking lot on East Chestnut Street between the Knox County Courthouse and the Knox County Service Center.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to1 p.m., rain or shine.
Eric Sloan, of the Marion-based Sharp-Shred company will be on sight to safely destroy all old medical records, financial statements, legal briefs, old files, credit reports, computer disks and VCR tapes. Donations will be requested to help defray costs.
The Board of Knox County Commissioners also announced that the one-day “Recycling Round Up” collection for appliances, computers and cell phones has been cancelled for this year due to the impending sale of the Knox County Recycling Center.
All major appliances, with the exception of televisions and stereos, are accepted at the Knox County Recycling Center free of charge during regular working hours. Effective May 1, computers and everything that attaches to computers will no longer be accepted for recycling.
Effective with that date, computers will only be accepted during special collection events. The first special collection event for computers will be held on September 10th at the Knox County Fairgrounds. Computers along with tires and household hazardous waste will be accepted at that one-day event.
There is plenty of parking available for citizens who wish to attend Shred It Day and watch the information being shredded. Paper clips or staples need not be removed. The large shredder can also safely shred checkbooks and lightweight file folders. Citizens should limit their amount of documents to be shred to approximately five large boxes.
Traffic flow will be in a U-shape with participants entering from the western most drive on East Chestnut Street.
For more information about this event and recycling in general, citizens are urged to call Linda Montgomery in the Knox County Commissioners Office at 393-6704.
